“Atlanta” is a hit new comedy/drama television series created by as well as starring actor Donald Glover, also known by his stage name Childish Gambino. The series has been rather popular by the people following through his work as a musician, actor, and stand-up comic.
The plot of the show follows Donald Glover playing the main character Earn, a deadbeat disappointment to his family and girlfriend and his attempt to get a better life for him and his daughter. Earn is a dropout with no money or promise to his name, but sees the opportunity to change that when his cousin who goes by the stage name “Paper Boi” makes a music video that becomes a hit. Earn sees this as his opportunity to strike it big in the music industry and put some trust back in his name to his family.
The show has been a hit because of its funny and awkward but honest humor, and has covered many serious topics in a way many would deem respectable, covering police brutality, homophobia and to what regards sexuality should be defined as.
“Atlanta” as a television show has received well respected reviews, with the website Rotten Tomatoes giving the first season an approval rating of 100% and a rating of 8.9/10. Metacritic gave it a score of 90/100.
The appeal of the show “Atlanta” largely stems from the fact that it presents honest situations in a way that feels relatable to all people.
It has a sort of silent but hard hitting kind of comedy that everyone can relate to. The topics are diverse but all tie back to a similar feel of unease and awkwardness in the settings people face on a daily basis. From unwarranted conversations to having to deal with disappointed parents, “Atlanta” veils it all with a funny sense of relief that we all share these moments.
Overall I think the journey of Earn is an incredibly interesting piece of work, and is worth a watch for anyone who can enjoy some hard hitting comedy with dramatic and reflective undertones. I would give the show a 9.5/10 for the first few episodes, but how the series will progress is entirely up to Glover himself.
Donald Glover was on a recent hiatus for all work including music and acting for reasons unknown until leaked lately that he is now a new proud father, and was probably dedicating some time to his newborns first couple months.
Donald Glover was also confirmed for the role of Lando Calrissian in the upcoming Star Wars Han Solo spin off movie to debut its release in December 2018.
