In the past few video games have been given movie adaptations. However, the PlayStation exclusive action-adventure game, Uncharted, was given just that, a full-scale Hollywood production by Sony. The movie, however, has caused much debate between fans of the games on whether it would stay faithful to the original series, or create a much different plot different from the source material. As a fan of the games, I was curious how well the movie would hold up and if any of the very noticeable problems spotted in the trailers bring the movie down. And of course, there are going to be movie spoilers.

One of the most noticeable problems picked out by critics was the casting. Tom Holland as Nathan Drake obviously was not too good of a fit for the role. He acted too childish to play the character and casters made his character out to be an alcoholic whereas in the games he was a wise crack that was brave and adventurous.

There were scenes where he nailed the role, however he seems too childish and young for role, not to mention he looks nothing like Drake from the games. Mark Wahlberg, despite also looking nothing like his character, captures the character of Victor Sullivan perfectly. In the video game Sullivan was a sarcastic old man hellbent on finding treasure, and Wahlberg filled the role perfectly with even every joke being timed perfectly.

Another cause for concern is the movie’s plot. Many were wondering and I was even wondering if the story was similar to the games. Short answer is yes, it does loosely follow the storyline of the fourth video game in the series however other scenes, such as the skydiving scene shown in the trailer, were taken from other games in the series. The movie does reflect the adventurous theme of the games despite not copying the game’s story for a cinematic release.

One thing the movie got completely wrong was how the two main characters (Sully and Drake) met. Originally, they had known each other since Drake was a teenager when he tried to pickpocket Sully, although writers had them meet as absolute strangers before they embark on their adventure.

In my opinion the movie was a solid 3.7 out of 5. I enjoyed it but I feel that the casting could have been better and the and a lot of the scenes were absurd but would recommend the movie though because it was a fun movie that kept me on the edge the whole time.
