“High school students should be given longer, homework-free breaks”

During the month of December, high school students received a two-week holiday break to end the first semester. College students received an entire month of holiday break. After this past month, I have realized that high school students should receive breaks for all holidays.

The average high school student goes to school for six to seven hours a day. They attend school for five days a week and have school for nine months a year. College students typically do not have classes every day of the week and if they do, they normally do not have a full six hours of class.

Colleges, however, give breaks that are much longer than high school breaks. For example, they not only get an entire month for Christmas, but they also get out for summer a whole month before high school and start school later than high school students. In my opinion, this just is not fair.

Now, I do realize that college classes are more extreme than high school classes, but they do not attend school for the same amount of time that we do. After calculating, college students get an extra two months off than high school students do. So, they only attend school for seven months during the year.

Another component that I think should be thought about is the fact that many high school teachers give homework over holiday break. I can not speak for college students, so I can not say that their teachers do not give them homework, but I think this is wrong. Students are given a holiday break to not only spend time with family, but to also give their brain a break from all the work they have completed at school before the break. Both high school and college students deserve to have a break from all the schoolwork and studying.

Teachers that give homework over the break are only adding more stress to students over break. Coming from a student’s perspective, homework is the worst thing to have over break. There should be a designated time for school during the school day and then there should be a designated time for family and friends during holiday breaks, weekends and after school.

High school students should be given longer, homework-free breaks soon. After tiring schoolwork, students need to enjoy some relax-ing time off. After a break to recharge, students will be ready to return and ready to learn. Longer breaks will help students to be more focused when school begins again and a break without homework would be even better.
