Dolphins dominated their first two games against Choctaw and Catholic. The new head football coach, Coach Clayton, has changed the program to reflect a new style a playing at Gulf Breeze.
Coach Cook said, “Summer training was brutal. Those boys worked harder this summer than they ever have before. Clayton had them flipping tractor tires and pulling trucks with rope.”
Senior John Learned explained Clayton’s new ideas for the team in terms of eating peanut butter and jelly sandwiches and drinking lots of chocolate milk. Clayton has a new way of doing things and Dolphins aren’t complaining.
The football team has shown a lot of improvement which is displayed by their 2-0 record and a win in the Kickoff Classic. The Dolphins have beat Fort Walton Beach, Choctaw, and Catholic thus far. The training they endured has prepared them for the upcoming season.
Starting quarterback and senior, Tyler Phelps said, “The program needed a change and Coach Clayton brought just that. From the day he took the job he changed everything about Gulf Breeze football, and it has shown up in a big way on the field.”
The players are appreciative of Clayton’s efforts to improve the football team. One of the team captains, senior Logan Green said, “We’ve all been working since February with Coach Clayton and I don’t think there is a word to describe how hard we have worked. All I have to say is when Clayton came in we were 10 years behind in the weight room and on the field. I would say we’ve worked to up to par if not better now, and we are only going to keep getting better.”
The 2-0 record is especially important to the senior football players. This is their last year to play as a Dolphin but their first year to play for Clayton.
The Clayton era has just begun but already Athletic Director Coach Alt has high hopes, “I anticipate an electric and fantastic season. I anticipate a lot more wins in the future.”
Coach Alt’s motto of, “Trample the weak and hurdle the dead,” are words that have impacted the Dolphin football team more than anyone could know.
The Dolphins look towards upcoming games with the knowledge that Coach Clayton has trained them to the best of his ability.
