Girls do heavy lifting to get gold

weightliftiong On Thursday, November 3 the girls weightlifting team had a Lift-A-Thon at home after school to warm up and teach the new girls what a meet is typically like and to raise money for the team. The Lift-A-Thon allowed the new girls to try to compete and learn the rules of a meet. There are two events that are competed in: bench and clean-and-jerks.

After the Lift-A-Thon the girls team had quite the home winning streak with a win against Pace on Thursday, November 10; a win against Milton on Wednesday, November 16; and a win against West Florida on Wednesday, November 30.

After the girls’ win against Pace, Coach Spencer said, “Ladies, awesome job yesterday. We beat Pace 54 to 32. That just shows how hard you have been working.”

On Wednesday, December 7 the girls had their first invitational located at Navarre High School. Only the top two girls in each weight class are sent to invitationals but everyone is allowed to compete in the dual and tri meets; just not for points.

Junior Delaney Batte said, “The Navarre invitational was a really nice experience. I enjoyed competing against some really talented girls. I wish I would have done better on clean-and-jerks, but that day they just weren’t too hot.”

The meets remaining in the season are only for the top two girls in each weight class at the school. January 13 is Districts, Regionals is to be announced, and February 3 is the State Meet.
