“American Crime Story: Impeachment,” starring Sarah Paulson and Beanie Feldstein, premiered on FX on Sept. 7, 2021. “Impeachment” is the third season of American Crime Story. This season portrays the Clinton-Lewinsky scandal. It follows the book A Vast Conspiracy by Jeffrey Toobin.

Monica Lewinsky is actually a producer on the show. The story of the Lewinsky scandal has been told many times, but with Lewinsky as a producer, were sure to get a different perspective on the show. The show goes into detail of Linda Tripp and Monica Lewinsky’s friendship and follows Tripp’s betrayal of Lewinsky.

President Bill Clinton was impeached in 1998 following accusations of sexual misconduct with then White House intern Lewinsky. Following the accusations, Clinton famously stated, “I did not have sexual relations with that woman, Miss Lewinsky.”

Tripp was the whistleblower who revealed Clinton and Lewinsky’s affair to the public. Her revelations came to light following her secret recordings of Lewinsky describing details of her affair with the President. Although her actions were illegal due to wiretapping, Tripp was subjected to immunity from prosecution by the United States Supreme Court and Independent Counsel Kenneth Starr.

One of Tripp’s key evidences was a navy-blue dress owned by Lewinsky, which was stained by President Clinton. To help her case, Tripp convinced the White House intern to not have the dress dry cleaned.

Lewinsky has talked about her relations with President Clinton and deeply regrets the relationship. Because the Internet was newly founded at the time, Lewinsky was one of the first victims of cyber bullying. “I’m kind of known for something that’s not so great to be known for,” Lewinsky once said, regarding her affair with Clinton.

Since the infamous trial against Clinton, Lewinsky has become an outspoken activist regarding cyberbullying. She took back her narrative regarding the situation and found her voice through the events that have clouded her whole life.

“American Crime Story: Impeachment” aired its finale on Oct. 19, 2021. The limited series currently has a rating of 67 percent on Rotten Tomatoes based on critical reception and an 80 percent approval based on audience reception.

Creator Ryan Murphy’s anthology series has excelled at portraying events that shocked America. The first season covers the trial of O.J Simpson. This season won five awards at the Emmy’s in 2016. The second season covers the assassination of Gianni Versace, unfortunately this season did not win any awards. With all of the effort put into this season we can only hope for more awards in 2022.
