SPOILER WARNING: THIS REVIEW MAY CONTAINS EVENTS AND DETAILS FROM THE SHOW.
Squid Game is a South Korean survival TV drama, it is a kill or be killed show a lot like The Hunger Games.
The show is about a middle-aged man named Seong Gi-Hun played by Lee Jung-Jae. He is extremely poor and lives with his mother, Seong has a young daughter who lives with her mom and stepdad. Seong is in crippling debt and in the first episode, he is beaten up with the promise of selling his organs on the black market if he cannot pay his debt within a month. Seong tries desperately to make money, but nothing is working, until one day he runs into a strange businessperson at the train station.
After making small talk for a while the strange man challenges Seong to a game. Ddakji is a game where each player is given a folded square of material and the goal is to flip the other player’s square. Every round they bet 100,000 won (about eighty-five US dollars) the strange man wins repeatedly, however since Seong cannot pay he satisfies himself by slapping Seong each time instead of making him pay. Finally, Seong is victorious, and the strange man gives him his money and a single business card.
There is a phone number on the card, which Seong calls and informs the operator that he would like to compete in a game. Later in the episode, Seong gets into a car late at night and when the door closes a gas knocks him out. Seong wakes up in a mysterious room full of strangers. They all wear the mane green and white jumpsuit with numbers 001-456 an old man being 001 and Seong being 456. The first game the contestants play is red-light green light. However, this is no ordinary red light green light each time you move after the voice calls out red light you are instantly shot and killed.
Every death is extremely graphic. If you are triggered by blood or death in any way, you should definitely not watch this show. Almost half of the original players died in the first game and the remaining players are shocked.
Every episode there is a new children’s game like togue of war, marbles, and squid games. The creators of the game have produced some highly creative ways of killing the contestants. This show was very entertaining and had me on the edge of my seat the whole time.
However, there were a few issues I had with the show, first, the excessive amount of violence as I mentioned before. Though the amount of gore, cuts, and bruises are quite realistic I feel like I would have enjoyed the show a little more if I had not had to see anyone’s brain leaking out of their skull. Second, each individual episode is about an hour-long and there are nine episodes in the series. Overall, it was an interesting and thrilling show and I recommend it to anyone looking for a new show to watch on Netflix.
