Apple is one of the biggest technology companies in the world, they have released hundreds of different types of products that have overall improved many people’s lives. The company is now on their 15th edition of the iPhone, and some are confused on how much better their phones can get. Other than a few new colors, from far away, there is seemingly nothing very different compared to preexisting iPhones, and certainly nothing different enough to pay for the big price tag. Most people do not see the point in buying a brand-new phone for minimal upgrades, therefore the need for the newest phone is not very high. In fact, the biggest difference in the newest iPhone may be the one thing holding people back from purchasing it.
The newest aspect of the iPhone 15 that has people talking is the switch from the “lightning port” to a USB-C charging port. This is being talked about so heavily because the switch would be considered an inconvenience for the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max users. If you were to find yourself in a situation where your phone is almost dead, but you have the newest iPhone that no one has a charger for, you could potentially be put in a tough situation. It would be quite rare for you to be lucky enough to find someone near you with not just the newest phone, but someone willing to share their charger with you. This change of charging ports is the most unexpected, however it was necessary for Apple to do.
Many are wondering why Apple chose to convert from the beloved lightning port to an entirely different charger. This is explained by Eric Limer from Gear Patrol, “The switch to USB-C, and the resulting death of the Lightning port, was ultimately made inevitable by legislation in the European Union, mandating that all cable-rechargeable devices sold in the EU from 2024 need to have a USB-C port.” The reasoning for this decision by the European Union is because it would overall benefit everyone in the future if there was a universal charging port.
This change of charging ports was hinted at slightly over the years with some variations of the iPad appearing with the USB-C port, however to people that do not own iPads or are not up to date with all the newest Apple products, this change seems sudden. Although this change can be seen not a good company decision, the change was necessary and, in many years, these new chargers will be easier to come by.
