Artists Represent at Great Gulfcoast Art Festival

Art submitted by Mrs. Day

This piece is a batik titled “Sleepy Tygerrr” by Juliana McCarthy (12th grade). It won first place in the textiles category at 2021 Great Gulfcoast Arts Festival in November. A batik is created by melting clear wax and using it to draw on muslin fabric. Fabric dyes are then applied to add color. The wax creates a resist, preventing the dye from absorbing in certain places. When finished, the wax is removed with a warm iron.
