Starting off strong in the Girls Varsity soccer scene, the Lady Dolphins owned a 2-0 win against the Pace Patriots. Each team did amazingly well, especially GBHS goalie Aubrey McMillion who had multiple good saves, and the players like Adriana Diemer who gave powerful kicks.
The Dolphins played on offense, keeping the Patriots locked in the corner. They got close to getting a few goals themselves, only for our goalie, Aubrey McMillion, to save the day with her great catches. In the play, the Dolphins did excellent with close-up interceptions. All around, the Dolphins had some amazing kicks and made great opportunities for the Dolphins to score, leading to their landslide win.
“I think our offense was really good when we got into our half field set, did a good job creating scoring chances.” said Coach Gatica, the girl’s varsity soccer team coach and head coach of the program, “Defensively we were sound most of the game. There was a ten-minute period where we were under a lot of pressure.”
“That first game against pace, the girls were really up for it, there was high intensity, the girls had a great attitude, we were fast, and it was fun to watch. The girls played good soccer that day.” Coach Gatica said, “Aubrey McMillion made about four to five saves.”
In the next few games over the weekend, the Dolphins went to Biloxi to play against Ocean Springs and Biloxi Highschool: they Lost 2-1 to Ocean Springs and tied 2-2 Biloxi. “In those games we struggled with corner kicks,” which Coach Gatica went on to mention was a high percentage scoring play. However, they have been practicing against those in practice the past few days and are sure to improve with time.
The girls were all respectful and had good sportsmanship, apologizing when they ran into each other or accidentally knocking another person over on the other team. “This year, our team is so much stronger, friendship wise, and we’re much more together. We’re a team, and the bonding off the field is so important.” Said Lena Macdonald, number 19 and the center defense, “Even on the bench, we all cheer everyone on, shouting, clapping, and chanting. The atmosphere is what makes it so much better.”
They also have a Freshmen team who has their first game on November 12th. “I’m looking forward to watching them play and see how they’re progressing with their practices.” Said Coach Gatica. All the teams work hard, and it shows in every kick and pass.
