At GBHS, our band is a vital part of school spirit. They play at sports performances, pep rallies, and so much more. The Soundwave Band has long been recognized for its excellence in their practice and performance. The students who make up this talented group bring a range of skills and a shared love for music. However, now our band members will be showcasing their skills as individuals for the Santa Rosa All County Band.
All County Band is composed of 70 to 75 students from public, private, or home schools throughout Santa Rosa County. This can create fierce competition, with multiple people vying for the same spot. This prestigious ensemble gathers the most accomplished student musicians from across the county, and gaining a spot requires more than just technical skill, – musicians must be able to perform with and without accompaniments, as well as play under pressure. This year, about 39 students from our soundwave band will be trying out for a spot. Mr. Singletary, the band director commented,” Our goal every year is to have more students try out than the year before.”
While the Soundwave’s collective performances are impressive, it is the individual effort and commitment of each student that will truly set them apart for their auditions. In a band, most of the practice time is spent honing the skill of being able to play well with other musicians. Because of this, students do not usually get the opportunity to consistently play by themselves.
This year’s tryouts were held at Milton High School, where hundreds of students came to attempt their solos. Student and band member Nick Cannon said, “To tryout, we had to play scales and a short, prepared piece in front of a panel of judges.”
Playing alone also presents the challenge of stage fright. Many people find that performing is easier in a band or orchestra because they have the support and comradery of their peers with them. Playing solo, however, can appear daunting to those unused to it.
To make sure they are fully prepared, the students are taking their practice sessions to the next level. The director, Mr. Singletary, has been working with them extensively on specific techniques to help them excel in their solo performances.
The people who do make it onto the All County Band will have the opportunity to participate in practices together with the best student band musician in the county. The practices will all lead to a series of performances that have been held at a variety of venues over the years.
